Effects of gastric acid on euro coins: chemical reaction and radiographic appearance after ingestion by infants and children.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whether coins of the new European currency (euro) corrode when they are exposed to gastric acid, and whether this change can be detected radiographically. METHODS: The eight different denominations of coins were immersed for seven days in 0.15 N hydrochloride acid (HCl), which corresponds to the level of post-prandial gastric acid. A Swedish crown coin and three different Austrian schilling coins were used as controls. The coins were weighed and radiographed daily to evaluate visible corrosions and HCl was analysed daily for possible dissolved substances. RESULTS: All coins lost weight within 24 hours after exposure to HCl. The 1, 2, and 5 euro cent coins developed changes that were visible on radiographs. The weights of all coins decreased by 0.43% to 11.30% during one week. The dissolved substances measured in the HCl corresponded to the different metals and alloys of the coins, except for copper, which does not dissolve in HCl. The highest absolute weight loss was observed in the Swedish crown coin (0.67 g), and the highest relative weight loss in the 1 Austrian schilling coin (11.30%). The two coins that showed the highest absolute and relative weight losses were the 2 euro (0.54 g or 6.35%) and the 1 euro (0.48 g or 6.39%) coin. CONCLUSIONS: A higher rate of toxicity for the new European coins compared with coins of other currencies is not expected, unless a massive coin ingestion occurs.
Neuropeptide Y in obese women during treatment with adrenergic modulation drugs.
BACKGROUND: The aim of the study is the assessment whether weight loss treatment with adrenergic modulation drugs modifies neuropeptide Y (NPY) plasma concentration in obese women. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 13 obese women (BMI 38.3 +/- 4.4) were tested before and subsequently 10 and 20 days after weight loss treatment. The treatment consisted of a very low caloric diet of 400 kcal (1670 kJ) daily combined with ephedrine with caffeine (E + C) or ephedrine with caffeine and yohimbine (E + C + Y) administered for 10 days using the cross-over method. The patients underwent physical examination, including heart rate and blood pressure measurements, spectral heart rate variability (HRV) at rest and after 3 minute handgrip and a 15 minute cycloergometer exercise at 75 W. All the above mentioned tests were carried out thrice in each patient. In 13 obese patients and in 6 control women plasma NPY concentrations were determined by a specific radioimmunoassay using rabbit anti-NPY antiserum and a standard synthetic porcine NPY (Peninsula Lab.). RESULTS: Plasma NPY concentrations were significantly lower in the obese persons compared with the control group. During weight loss treatment with adrenergic modulation drugs no changes in plasma NPY were found at rest and after physical exercise. Also no differences in HRV indices were observed. CONCLUSIONS: 1. Low plasma NPY concentration observed in obesity may be a contraregulatory factor that could prevent further weight increase. 2. Weight reduction treatment did not affect plasma NPY concentration and cardiovascular response to physical exercise. 3. The doses of adrenergic modulation drugs used in our study did not induce any serious side effects, and were so low that no change of plasma NPY concentration and cardiovascular responses were observed at rest.
Neonatal weight loss in breast and formula fed infants.
OBJECTIVE: To define the range of neonatal weight loss in a population relative to feeding method. DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study. SETTING: Maternity service providing geographically defined, community based newborn follow up. PARTICIPANTS: 971 consecutive term newborns of birth weight > or = 2500 g during the first 2-3 weeks of life; 34 excluded (inadequate data). 937 included: 45% breast fed, 42% formula fed, 13% breast and formula fed. OUTCOME MEASURES: Maximum weight loss and timing, age on regaining birth weight. RESULTS: Median weight loss: formula fed 3.5%, breast fed 6.6%. Upper centiles for maximum weight loss differ considerably (95th centiles: breast fed = 11.8%, formula fed = 8.4%; 97.5th centiles: breast fed = 12.8%, formula fed = 9.5%). Median time of maximum weight loss: 2.7 days for breast fed and formula fed. Recovery of birth weight: breast fed median 8.3 days, 95th centile 18.7 days, 97.5th centile 21.0 days; formula fed median 6.5 days, 95th centile 14.5 days, 97.5th centile 16.7 days. The time taken to regain birth weight correlates with both the degree and timing of initial weight loss for all groups. CONCLUSIONS: Early neonatal weight loss is defined allowing identification of infants who merit closer assessment and support.
Leptin promotes biliary cholesterol elimination during weight loss in ob/ob mice by regulating the enterohepatic circulation of bile salts.
Leptin administration to obese C57BL/6J (ob/ob) mice results in weight loss by reducing body fat. Because adipose tissue is an important storage depot for cholesterol, we explored evidence that leptin-induced weight loss in ob/ob mice was accompanied by transport of cholesterol to the liver and its elimination via bile. Consistent with mobilization of stored cholesterol, cholesterol concentrations in adipose tissue remained unchanged during weight loss. Plasma cholesterol levels fell sharply, and microscopic analyses of gallbladder bile revealed cholesterol crystals as well as cholesterol gallstones. Surprisingly, leptin reduced biliary cholesterol secretion rates without affecting secretion rates of bile salts or phospholipids. Instead, cholesterol supersaturation of gallbladder bile was due to marked decreases in bile salt hydrophobicity and not to hypersecretion of biliary cholesterol per se, such as occurs in humans during weight loss. In addition to regulating bile salt composition, leptin treatment decreased bile salt pool size. The smaller, more hydrophilic bile salt pool was associated with substantial decreases in intestinal cholesterol absorption. Within the liver, leptin treatment reduced the activity of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase, but it did not change activities of cholesterol 7alpha-hydroxylase or acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase. These data suggest that leptin regulates biliary lipid metabolism to promote efficient elimination of excess cholesterol stored in adipose tissue. Cholesterol gallstone formation during weight loss in ob/ob mice appears to represent a pathologic consequence of an adaptive response that prevents absorption of biliary and dietary cholesterol.
Body mass index and short-term weight change in relation to mortality in Dutch women after age 50 y.
BACKGROUND: The question of whether weight loss increases a person's longevity is important given the high prevalence of obesity and the large number of people trying to lose weight in industrialized countries. OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effect of body mass index (BMI) and weight change (within 1 y of baseline) on subsequent mortality. DESIGN: This prospective cohort study had a median follow-up of 17 y. Subjects were 8100 women aged 50-66 y who participated in a population-based breast cancer-screening project in the Netherlands between 1974 and 1977. Weight and height were measured during the first and second screening visits. All women were followed until 1996 for causes of death. Cox proportional hazard analyses were conducted for mortality from all causes (n = 1269), cardiovascular disease (CVD; n = 402), and cancer (n = 492). RESULTS: During follow-up we observed a statistically significant increased risk of mortality from all causes (hazard ratio: 1.4; 95% CI: 1.2, 1.6), cardiovascular disease, and cancer for women in the highest quartile of BMI (in kg/m(2)), > or =27.77. Mortality from all causes, CVD, and cancer did not increase significantly in women with a weight gain of > or =15%. weight loss was also not significantly related to mortality from all causes, CVD, and cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Mortality was highest for women in the highest BMI quartile (> or =27.77). Extreme weight gain or weight loss within 1 y was not statistically significantly associated with subsequent higher mortality.
The relationship between a urinary cachectic factor and weight loss in advanced cancer patients.
A 24K glycoprotein, the proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF), has been identified in mice and humans with cancer cachexia. Clinical cross-sectional studies found an association between the presence of PIF in urine and tumors of patients and weight loss. For the first time, we report results from a longitudinal study establishing the relationship between a urinary PIF pattern and persistent weight loss. Over time, cancer patients positive for the PIF pattern experienced weight loss, whereas those with a negative test gained weight.
Dietetics majors' weight-reduction beliefs, behaviors, and information sources.
One hundred twenty-eight female dietetics majors aspiring to be registered dietitians were surveyed to identify and assess their reasons for wanting to lose weight and the weight-loss techniques and information sources they used and would recommend to clients. Fisher's exact tests were used to analyze behavioral data, and binomial tests to determine whether proportions of students achieving their desired weight-loss outcomes were significantly greater than 50%. Most dieters wanted to lose weight to improve their appearance and increase their self-esteem. Sound weight-loss techniques that were used and recommended include increased exercise, low-fat foods and snacks, and portion control. Accurate information sources used and recommended included food labels and college nutrition courses. Unsound weight-loss techniques and potentially inaccurate information sources were also used and would be recommended by a few students. Findings suggest a need for more learning opportunities focusing on enhancement of self-esteem and weight management.
