Tamiflu (Oseltamivir Phosphate) is a medicine to treat flu (infection caused by influenza virus). It belongs to a group of medicines called Neuraminidase Inhibitors. These medications attack the influenza virus and prevent it from spreading inside your body. Tamiflu treats flu at its source by attacking the virus that causes the flu, rather than simply masking symptoms.

Important Note
The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or other healthcare professional. It should not be construed to indicate that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you. Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.

Uses
Antibiotics are medicines that kill bacteria and are, therefore, not effective against viral infections. Because flu is a viral infection, it should be treated with an antiviral medication, such as Tamiflu. Tamiflu is used for the treatment of infection by the influenza virus. It is indicated in patients 1 year and older who have had symptoms for no more than 2 days. Tamiflu is a Neuraminidase Inhibitors and treats the cause of influenza infection by inhibiting the critical neuraminidase protein on the surface of the virus.

How to take this medication
Tamiflu should be taken twice daily (once in the morning and once in the evening) for five days. Tamiflu can be taken with or without food. As with many medicines, if taken with a light snack, milk, or a meal, the potential for stomach upset may be reduced. You should complete the entire treatment of ten capsules, even if you are feeling better. Never share Tamiflu with anyone, even if they have the same symptoms. It is important that you begin your treatment with Tamiflu as soon as possible from the first appearance of your flu symptoms.

Side Effects
Tamiflu is generally well tolerated, though it may cause mild-to-moderate nausea or vomiting in one out of 10 people. Taking Tamiflu with food may reduce the potential for these side effects. Other less common side effects may include bronchitis, sleeplessness and vertigo

Precautions
Inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including kidney disorders, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

Missed Dose
If you a miss a dose, take it if it is within 2 hours of the missed dose. If it is more than 1 hour since the missed dose, skip it and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up on your dosage schedule.

Storage
Store this medication at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from heat and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep this and all medications out of the reach of children.

Effect of experimental influenza A infection on systemic immune and inflammatory parameters
The economic impact and medical complication rate of viral upper respiratory infections are well documented, but many of the physiologic, inflammatory, and immune responses to respiratory viruses have only recently been investigated. A previous study demonstrated differential systemic immune and inflammatory responses in allergic rhinitis (AR) and nonallergic rhinitis (NAR). The results show that intranasal challenge with FLU induces changes in leukocyte histamine release, but not other systemic immune and inflammatory responses.

Low vaccination rate among hospital health care workers
The influenza vaccination rate among health care workers is not very high and needs to be improved. Data shows that the vaccination rate was higher when workers were older, men, physicians, technicians, or laboratory workers, vaccinated in the previous flu season and had fewer contacts with patients. The variables with the highest impact on the vaccination rate were vaccination the previous year, belief that vaccination is highly effective, and affirmation that prevention is important.

Health outcomes among patients receiving Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir )
Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) was approved by the FDA for the treatment of influenza in 1999. The primary objective was to compare health outcomes among influenza patients who were treated with Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) and those who were not. The adjusted incidence rate ratio for major cardiac outcome was 0.56 in those without a positive history of major cardiac disease, indicating that those in the Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) group tended to be at lower risk of cardiac outcomes than those without Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ). Results show that there appears to be no increased risk of cardiac or neuropsychiatric outcomes among subjects with influenza who were treated with Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) in comparison with those who were not.

Pharmacoeconomic assessment of Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) in treating influenza
To assess the pharmacoeconomics of treating influenza with Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) in healthy Danish adolescents and adults. METHOD: Cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analyses were used to compare Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) to usual care (symptomatic treatment with over the counter (OTC) medicine), considering both the societal and health care payer's perspectives. Pharmacoeconomic analyses of influenza treatment with Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) in an otherwise healthy adolescent/adult population show that this treatment saves money for society and is associated with a relatively low cost from a health care payer's perspective. Treatment of influenza with Tamiflu ( Oseltamivir ) would be cost-effective for healthy adolescents/adults.
