A comparative study of Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) with a focused education and psychotherapy program versus Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) alone in the treatment of depression in general practice.

The efficacy of a focused education and psychotherapy program (FEPP) plus antidepressant was compared with that of usual psychosocial treatment and antidepressant in a general practice setting. The FEPP comprised interpersonal counselling (IPC) delivered in a modified way to suit the general practice setting, together with patient education and selected cognitive behavioural techniques. All patients were treated with Venlafaxine ( Effexor )-XR. Thirty-one patients entered the study, three withdrawing before completion of the 12 week trial. Both treatments produced a statistically significant reduction in BDI and POMS scores from baseline, with greater improvement evident in the FEPP plus antidepressant group.

An improved novel method of Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) synthesis

OBJECTIVE: To synthesize Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) with an improved novel method. METHODS: p-methoxypheny lethyl-acid was reacted with SOCl(2) to produce acyl chloride which was reacted with N,N-dimethylamine solution to get amide; then through Ivanov reaction and reduction by KBH(4)/BF(3).Et(2)O to yield Venlafaxine ( Effexor ). RESULT: Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) was successfully synthesized by using this method with an yield rate of 50.3%. CONCLUSION: The improved method is suitable for industrial production of Venlafaxine ( Effexor ).

Newer antidepressants in pregnancy: prospective outcome of a case series.

antidepressant drug choice in pregnancy is a complex problem especially for new drugs. Among 590 cases exposed to drugs during pregnancy who were followed by our center, 21 cases used newer antidepressants, i.e., Venlafaxine ( Effexor ), Mirtazapine ( Remeron ), nefazodone. We present the gestational findings and fetal outcomes of these cases. Ten cases had used Venlafaxine ( Effexor ), one case had used both Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) and Mirtazapine ( Remeron ), eight had used Mirtazapine ( Remeron ) alone or with some other drugs and two had used nefazodone, in the first trimester. Of the 21 cases, 17 (80.9%) had healthy babies, 3 (14.3%) decided to terminate the pregnancy, and 1 (4.8%) spontaneous abortion was observed in a case exposed to Mirtazapine ( Remeron ), alprazolam, diazepam and trifluoperazine. All obstetrical findings were normal during the pregnancy of each case. No congenital abnormality and developmental problem was observed in the babies followed up for 12 months. The aim of the present study is to contribute the data to the limited knowledge available in the literature regarding human pregnancy.

Multiple complications and withdrawal syndrome associated with quetiapine/Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) intoxication.

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of quetiapine/Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) intoxication associated with multiple complications and to review their possible relationship with these 2 drugs. CASE SUMMARY: A 53-year-old white man was admitted to the hospital for loss of consciousness secondary to voluntary intoxication with Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) and quetiapine. Several complications were attributable to this intoxication including seizures, prolonged coma, respiratory depression, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, prolonged QRS and QTc intervals, and a possible Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) withdrawal syndrome. DISCUSSION: Quetiapine could be responsible for the neuroleptic malignant syndrome presented in this case. Moreover, Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) intoxication, fever, autonomic instability, and myoclonus presented serotonin syndrome as a differential diagnosis. Potential causes of seizures and prolongation of the QRS and QTc intervals are reviewed. Finally, prolonged coma and late Venlafaxine ( Effexor ) withdrawal are discussed with regard to the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of drug elimination in the context of intoxication. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should be aware of possible complications following intoxication with atypical antipsychotics and anti-depressants, including protracted altered mental status.
