Uses
Penicillin VK is a semi-synthetic penicillin antibiotic used
to treat many different types of infections, such as tonsillitis,
pneumonia, strep throat, bronchitis, and infections of the skin.
Penicillin VK works against only certain types of bacteria--it
is ineffective against fungi, viruses, and parasites.
How
to take this medication
Penicillin VK tablets are to be taken by mouth. Follow the
directions on the prescription label. Take with a full glass of
water; try to take while in a sitting or upright position. It is
best to take penicillin V 1 to 2 hours before or at least 2 hours
after eating; taking it with food can make it less effective. If
penicillin V upsets your stomach you can take it with food. If possible,
"bedtime" doses should be taken at least 10 minutes before actually
reclining. Do not drink fruit juice or carbonated beverages (soda)
with your dose, however. These beverages will decrease the effectiveness
of the drug.
Side
Effects
Less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue
to take Penicillin VK and talk to your doctor if you experience
· mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain; white patches
on the tongue; itching or discharge of the vagina; black, "hairy"
tongue or sore mouth or tongue.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop
taking Penicillin VK and seek emergency medical attention:
allergic reaction (shortness of breath; closing of your throat;
hives; swelling of your lips, face, or tongue; rash; or fainting);
seizures; · severe watery diarrhea and abdominal cramps; unusual
bleeding or bruising.
Precautions
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to another penicillin
or to a cephalosporin, do not take Penicillin VK unless your
doctor is aware of your allergy and monitors your therapy. Before
taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have kidney disease,
stomach or intestinal disease, or infectious mononucleosis. You
may not be able to take penicillin V because of an increased risk
of side effects.
If you get severe or watery diarrhea or a skin rash, do not treat
yourself. Call your prescriber or health care professional for advice.
If you are a diabetic, some glucose urine tests may give false positive
results while you are taking Penicillin VK.
Penicillin
VK is in the FDA pregnancy category B. This means that it is
unlikely to harm an unborn baby. Birth control pills (contraceptive
pills) may not work properly while you are taking this medicine.
Use an extra method of birth control for at least one month. Do
not, however, take Penicillin VK without first talking to
your doctor if you are pregnant. It is not known whether Penicillin
VK passes into breast milk. Do not take this medication without
first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
Overdose
Symptoms of Penicillin VK overdose include muscle spasms
or weakness, pain or twitching, pain in the fingers or toes, loss
of feeling in the fingers or toes, seizures, confusion, coma, and
agitation. If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control
center or emergency room immediately.
Missed
Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near
the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your
usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for
a missed one.
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed,
and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away
from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away
any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
