Uses
Fluoroquinolones e.g. Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) are used to treat bacterial infections in many different parts of the body. They work by killing bacteria or preventing their growth. Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) is frequently used to treat urinary infections, including those resistant to other antibiotics, as well as prostatitis. Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) is effective in treating infectious diarrheas caused by E. coli, campylobacter jejuni, and shigella bacteria and can also be used to treat various obstetric infections, including mastitis.

How to take this medication
Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) usually is given once daily. It is important to take it at least 2 hours before or 2 hours after any antacid, or mineral supplement with iron, calcium, zinc, or magnesium since these minerals bind Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) and prevent its absorption. Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) may be taken with or without food.

Side Effects
The most common side effects of Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) are Fainting; irregular or slow heart rate. Some of the uncommon side effects are Bloating or swelling of face, arms, hands, lower legs, or feet; blistering of skin; blurred vision; dizziness; headache; nervousness; pounding in the ears; rapid weight gain; sensation of skin burning; slow or fast heartbeat; skin itching, rash, redness, or swelling; tingling of hands or feet.

Precautions
If you are taking aluminum- or magnesium-containing antacids, didanosine, or sucralfate, do not take them at the same time that you take this medicine . It is best to take these medicines at least 2 hours before or after taking Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin). You should not take certain medications which correct a fast, slow or irregular heartbeat.

Do not take Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) if you are pregnant. Do not give Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) to infants, children, or teenagers unless otherwise directed by your doctor because Fluoroquinolones have been shown to cause bone development problems in young animals.

Levaquin ® (Levofloxacin) may also cause some people to become dizzy, lightheaded, drowsy, or less alert than they are normally. Make sure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use machines, or do anything else that can be dangerous if you are dizzy or are not alert .

Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Missed Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
