is a synthetic anti-viral drug used to prevent or treat certain
influenza (flu) infections (type A). To prevent a viral infection,

should be started before exposure to the virus. This medicine
is best taken before exposure, or as soon as possible after
exposure , to people who have the flu.

Uses
Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
is an antiviral which may be given alone or along with flu shots.
Rimantadine will not work for colds, other types of flu, or other
virus infections. Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
is used for the prevention or treatment of infections with influenza
A virus, especially for individuals at high-risk such as immunosuppressed
patients and nursing home residents. It should not be used as a
substitute for vaccination.
If you already have the flu, continue taking this medicine for the
full time of treatment even if you begin to feel better after a
few days . This will help to clear up your infection completely.
If you stop taking this medicine too soon, your symptoms may return.
This medicine should be taken for at least 5 to 7 days.
How
to take this medication
Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
is taken once or twice daily with or without food. It should be
taken with food if it causes an upset stomach. If used for treatment
of an established infection, Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
should be started as soon as possible, preferably within 48 hours
after the onset of the symptoms of infection with influenza A and
should be continued for 5 to 7 days or for 24 to 48 hours after
the disappearance of symptoms.
Side
Effects
Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
is generally well-tolerated and side effects are not commonly reported.
The less common side effects are Difficulty in concentrating; dizziness;
dryness of mouth; headache; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness;
stomach pain; trouble in sleeping; unusual tiredness; vomiting.
Precautions
Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine) may cause some people
to become dizzy or confused, or to have trouble concentrating. Make
sure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use
machines, or do anything else that could be dangerous if you are
dizzy or confused . No well-controlled studies have been done in
pregnant women to evaluate the safety of Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine).
Physicians may choose to use this drug during pregnancy when the
benefits are felt to outweigh the potential but unknown risks to
the fetus. The safety of Flumadine
®
(Rimantadine)
in nursing mothers has not been investigated.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center
or emergency room immediately.
Missed
Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near
the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your
usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for
a missed one.
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed,
and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away
from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away
any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
