Important Note
The following information is intended to supplement, not substitute
for, the expertise and judgment of your physician, pharmacist or
other healthcare professional. It should not be construed to indicate
that use of the drug is safe, appropriate, or effective for you.
Consult your healthcare professional before using this drug.
Uses
Doryx ® (Doxycycline) is is a synthetic broad-spectrum
antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including pneumonia,
lyme disease, acne, venereal (sexually transmitted) diseases, and
inhalational anthrax (after exposure). It is also used to prevent
malaria. Doryx ® (Doxycycline) is derived from tetracycline
and is known to be effective against a wide variety of bacteria,
such as Hemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma
pneumoniae, Chlamydia psittaci, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria
gonorrhoea, and many others. Doryx ® (Doxycycline)
is known to work by blocking the effect of an enzyme called collagenase.
How
to take this medication
Doryx ® (Doxycycline) may be taken with or without
meals. For most infections, doxycycline is taken once or twice daily
for 7 to 14 days.
Side
Effects
Doryx ® (Doxycycline) is generally well-tolerated.
The most common side effects are diarrhea or loose stools, nausea,
abdominal pain, and vomiting. Tetracyclines, such as Doryx ®
(Doxycycline), may cause tooth discoloration if used
in persons below 8 years of age. Exaggerated sunburn can occur with
tetracyclines; therefore, sunlight should be minimized during treatment.
Precautions
Do not take antacids or bismuth subsalicylate within 1 to 2 hours
of taking Doryx ® (Doxycycline). In addition, do
not take iron-containing medicines (including vitamin preparations
containing iron) within 2 to 3 hours of taking doxycycline. To do
so may keep Doryx ® (Doxycycline) from working properly.
Oral contraceptives (birth control pills) may not work properly
if you take them while you are taking tetracyclines. Unplanned pregnancies
may occur. You should use a different or additional means of birth
control while you are taking Doryx ® (Doxycycline).
If you have any questions about this, check with your doctor.
Tetracycline antibiotics, such as Doryx ® (Doxycycline),
can have toxic effects on development of bone in the fetus. Therefore,
tetracyclines are not recommended during pregnancy unless there
is no other appropriate antibiotic. Doryx ® (Doxycycline)
is secreted into breast milk. Since tetracyclines can cause decreased
bone, the use of tetracyclines in nursing mothers is not recommended.
Overdose
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center
or emergency room immediately.
Missed
Dose
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near
the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your
usual dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for
a missed one.
Storage
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed,
and out of reach of children. Store it at room temperature and away
from excess heat and moisture (not in the bathroom). Throw away
any medication that is outdated or no longer needed.
